Paramedics are registered health care professionals, or AHP’s (allied health professionals). A paramedic is trained to take a patient history, as well as undertake a comprehensive physical assessment for patients of all ages.
Within primary care Paramedics are able to undertake the FCP roadmap or University education to help them further develop their consultation and assessment skills. This can allow them to independently assess, identify, and treat a range of minor illnesses and injuries – such as common infections and musculoskeletal complaints.
Paramedics are now eligible to complete training to become a non-medical prescriber, and can go on to complete a master’s degree to become an advanced care practitioner. GP surgeries and PCN’s will often use paramedics to support provision of their ‘on the day’ service and home visiting, usually under the supervision and guidance of a duty GP.
