Overview
The training is named after Oliver McGowan, who was a young man whose death shone a light on the need for health and social care staff to have better skills, knowledge, and understanding of the needs of autistic people and people with a learning disability.
The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training (OMMT) on Learning Disability and Autism is the standardised training developed for this purpose. It is the UK Government’s preferred and recommended training for health and social care staff.
Training Requirements
The OMMT is delivered in two tiers (consisting of two parts), and all clinical and non-clinical staff will need to complete both parts of either Tier 1 or Tier 2.
- Part 1: The first part for both Tier 1 and Tier 2 is the free 90-minute online module, and is the same for all staff regardless of their job role and available at The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism – elearning for healthcare (e-lfh.org.uk)
- Part 2: The second part of the training is either a live one-hour online interactive session for those needing Tier 1, or, one-day face-to-face training for people who require Tier 2.
Access to Training
The Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent ICB have a Project Lead in place to support and advise Practices to ensure staff have the opportunity to access the live training.
There is also the option for staff to attend Train the Trainer courses, to allow Practices to deliver the face-to-face training on a Practice or PCN footprint.
