GPA Accredited Programme
The GPA Skills Certificate is an accredited, competency-based training programme designed to support the development of General Practice Assistants working within General Practice.
The programme is based on the national GPA Competency Framework and is structured around five key domains:
Clinical Domains
- Care
- Clinical
Non-Clinical Domains
- Communications
- Administration
- Managing Health Records
The programme is delivered through self-directed, work-based learning and requires learners to complete a portfolio of evidence demonstrating the knowledge, skills and behaviours required within the GPA role. The programme also encourages critical thinking, reflection and supported practice-based learning.
Learners are required to work through each competency domain and upload evidence onto an online learning platform throughout the programme.
GP Mentor Support
Each participating practice must assign a GP Mentor who will hold overall responsibility for supporting and signing off the learner’s training programme. Learners may also receive support from other suitably experienced colleagues within the practice, as approved by the GP Mentor.
Learners are expected to receive one day of protected learning time per week, consisting of:
- Half a day for self-directed learning
- Half a day for mentor supervision and supported practice learning
The anticipated timeframe for completion of the programme is approximately 6–9 months.
Once completed, the learner’s portfolio will be verified by a regional nominated GP Mentor before being submitted to the training provider for final verification and assessment.
On successful completion of the programme, learners will achieve:
- 10 credits at Level 4
Upcoming Programme Cohort
Applications for the current Lincolnshire Training Hub programme have now closed. However, the Staffordshire Training Hub is now accepting Expressions of Interest (EOIs) for the next GPA Accredited Programme cohort, which is anticipated to commence in late 2026.
The accredited route is suitable for staff currently employed within General Practice as a General Practice Assistant.
Further information regarding programme delivery, eligibility criteria, cohort dates and funding arrangements will be shared once confirmed.
